The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics,
National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden (NBIS) is a large national infrastructure in rapid development providing support, tools and training to the Swedish life science research community. NBIS constitutes the bioinformatics platform at SciLifeLab, a national resource that provides advanced technologies and technical know-how in molecular biosciences. NBIS is also the Swedish node in the European infrastructure ELIXIR for biological information.
We are now expanding NBIS’s support unit with 1-2 bioinformatician positions placed at SciLifeLab in Stockholm. The applicants will be integrated in a bioinformatics team in an exciting research environment and will have many opportunities to further improve current skills and develop new skills to keep up with bioinformatics challenges as they emerge.

Main responsibilities
We are looking for 1-2 bioinformatics experts that will participate in analysis of spatial omics data and/or advanced biostatistics/machine learning analyses, but also with other types of analysis. The work involves supporting Swedish researchers under a user fee-based support model. The projects will differ in complexity and length and will address a variety of biological or medical questions.
Responsibilities include planning, initiating, executing and reporting bioinformatics analyses, communication with research groups, staying aware of current developments in the field and being a part of NBIS advanced bioinformatics training for the Swedish research community. Regular internal meetings, training opportunities and professional development will be part of the work time. The position will include a certain amount of travel to other Swedish universities, as knowledge exchange both within NBIS and externally is a key aspect to maintain cutting-edge expertise for analysis of current and emerging data types.
Qualification requirements
The applicants need to fulfil the following requirements:
- PhD in bioinformatics, molecular biology, computer science or a related subject the employer considers of relevance to the position.
- Experience (3+ years) in working with advanced bioinformatics analyses of omics data from high throughput technologies.

Experience and ability to perform and evaluate analyses to a high international standard, in one or both fields:
- Spatial omics such as spatial transcriptomics, multiplexed spatial proteomics and spatial mass spectrometry. Experience with single-cell omics is also an advantage.
- Advanced biostatistics and machine learning, such as multivariate analysis, regularization, deep learning, or network-based, Bayesian or matrix factorization methods for multi-omics integration.
- Ability to independently perform data analysis and scientific interpretation based on omics data at an internationally competitive level.
- Proficiency in a scripting language like R or Python, as well as ability to work efficiently in a Linux command-line environment and on high performance computer clusters.
- Excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English, and ability to collaborate with scientists of different backgrounds.
Also meriting:
- Experience of support and teaching within bioinformatics.
- Postdoctoral experience.
- Strong skills in experimental design and software development.
- “Reproducible research” and “FAIR data” are central concepts to us, and expertise in the development of reproducible code by using code sharing platforms, workflow languages and container solutions is a strong merit.
Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability for the position, such as ability to drive projects independently, work in a collaborative, yet service-minded environment and a willingness to learn new methods and an ability to acquire new skills. Consideration will also be given to how the applicant’s experience and skills complement and strengthen the team and the scientific knowledge within NBIS.
About the employment
This is a full-time, indefinite-term employment with a six-month probationary period. Stockholm University applies individual salary setting. Start date as agreement.
