Would you like to work with ancient DNA, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Do you want an employer that invests in sustainable employment and offers safe, favorable working conditions? You are welcome to apply for employment as a bioinformatician at Uppsala University.
The Ancient DNA unit is a research infrastructure based at the Department of Organismal Biology at Uppsala University and the Department of Archaeology and Classical studies at Stockholm University, and is part of the national research infrastructures SciLifeLab, Swedigarch and ArchLab. The Ancient DNA unit is in operation since 2019 and the interest in the unit’s services is large across Sweden and internationally. At the Ancient DNA unit, you are part of a team that includes staff at Stockholm University, and is part of a research environment that includes the Human Evolution research program at Uppsala University and the Centre for Palaeogenetics in Stockholm.
The Ancient DNA unit develops and performs a broad range of analyses of ancient DNA as a service to researchers in e.g. archaeology, biology and medicine, and to e.g. museum staff and contract archaeology organizations. Analysis of ancient DNA is a powerful tool to understand the past and the purpose of the Ancient DNA unit is to make the methodology accessible to a larger and broader group of users.
Duties
The tasks consist of two parts: (1) Analysis of DNA data from historical and prehistorical material from humans, animals and plants, as well as from sediments. The analyses include e.g. data quality controls, mapping of DNA data to reference genomes, investigation of deamination patterns, analysis of sex chromosomes, analysis of mitochondrial and Y-chromosome haplogroups, principal component analysis, analysis, analysis of kinship, trait analysis and metagenomic analysis (incl. analysis of pathogenic microorganisms). The bioinformatician is involved in maintaining, updating and developing the unit’s analysis tools, data transfer and data/metadata management, and deposition of DNA data/metadata in repositories. (2) Project coordination and contacts with users; preparation of project quotes, agreements and reports; management and use of project management systems; and contributing to preparation of research publications and applications for funding.
Requirements
We are looking a person with a PhD in bioinformatics with focus on DNA data analysis, who has documented experience with genomics and ancient DNA. Excellent command of English in speech and writing is required.
Great importance will be placed on personal qualities such as ability to plan and organize your work. You should have good team-work skills, take responsibility and be meticulous.
