The Department of Immunology, Genetics and Pathology at Uppsala University has a broad research profile with strong research groups focusing on cancer, genetic and autoimmune diseases. A fundamental idea at the department is to stimulate translational research and thereby promote closer interactions between medical research and health care. Research is presently organized in six research programs: Cancer Precision Medicine, Cancer Immunotherapy, Genomics and Neurobiology, Molecular Tools and Functional Genomics, Neuro-Oncology and Neurodegeneration and Vascular Biology. Departmental activities are also integrated with the units for Oncology, Clinical Genetics, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Pathology, and Hospital Physics at Uppsala University Hospital. The department has teaching assignments in several education programs, including Master Programs, at the Faculty of Medicine. The department has a yearly turnover of around SEK 550 million, out of which about two thirds derive from external funding. IGP has approximately 400 employees, out of which 100 are PhD-students, and there are in total more than 850 affiliated staff members. Job Description:
Responsible for a project regarding signaling mechanisms related to VEGFR2 and VE-cadherin biology, which are important for vascular function in both normal tissue and cancer. The project includes animal experimental work, including tumor studies in mice as well as analysis using advanced microscopy (Leica SP8) of fixed tumor tissue from both human and mouse. Microscopy will be performed using confocal microscopes, followed by image analysis and statistical evaluation. Further analysis of endothelial cells in culture. The cells will be examined with respect to gene and protein expression, and their ability to respond to stimuli in various cell biological assays. In parallel analyses, the expression and function of genes/proteins of interest will be investigated through multiplex immunohistochemical staining of human cancer biopsies, with results evaluated through advanced image and statistical analysis. The project concludes with the compilation of data for oral and written presentations
Qualifications Required:
Master’s degree in a relevant field such as molecular biology or biomedicine. Previous experience in laboratory-based research. Experience and proficiency in animal experimental work (including valid certification), such as injection techniques, tissue perfusion, tissue dissection, genotyping, tissue fixation, and immunostaining using various detection methods, followed by advanced microscopy and image analysis. Extensive experience and skills in cell culture and biochemical/cell biological analysis methods (e.g., Proximity Ligation Assay (PLA), co-immunoprecipitation, immunoblotting, immunostaining, and analysis of various cellular responses), as well as subsequent statistical analysis using GraphPad Prism. Strong experience and ability in oral and written presentation in English.
Desirable and/or Additional Merits:
Previous research experience in vascular biology and solid theoretical and practical knowledge about endothelial cells, vascular permeability, and signaling mechanisms in both normal tissue and cancer. Ability to evaluate data, draw conclusions and plan future experiments with some independence. Emphasis on personal qualities and suitability. Publications in leading scientific journals are desirable.
