Researcher in Biomedical Engineering with focus on bioprinting

Uppsala Universitet
Uppsala län
för 4 dagar sedan

at the Division of Biomedical Engineering, Department of Materials Sciences and Engineering, Uppsala University

Temporary full-time position for 3 months, starting as soon as possible or by agreement
The Department of Materials Science and Engineering aims to be an environment for successful and valuable research and education with a focus on materials science solutions for important societal challenges. Our department is an exciting workplace with research in a broad technology-related area, from basic research to large-scale applied research, and close contacts with students through the department's involvement in engineering and master's programs. Our research and teaching is conducted within seven divisions with different research focus, as well as a division that provides support and service. The department is an international place to work, and has around 180 active co-workers.

About the division

The Division of Biomedical Engineering is part of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Ångström Laboratory. We perform research within the development and evaluation of new materials in interaction with biological systems to understand the underlying principles. For us, it is equally important to study the impact of materials on biological processes as well as the impact of biological processes on materials. Our ambition is to foster a dynamic teaching and research environment that is internationally recognised for its excellence in connecting basic research with clinical applications.

The interdisciplinary research group BioMaterial Systems, BmS, is a research group of about 20 people, with a focus on the use of additive manufacturing (AM, or 3D writing) to develop new biomaterials and implants. The group gathers expertise in materials science, mechanics and biology. More information about the research group's profile can be found here.

The group participates in and leads several large collaborative projects, both at national and international level, financed by e.g. The Swedish Research Council, VINNOVA, the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and the EU.

Project description
This project aims to further develop materials for bioprinting, i.e. 3D printing with cells, to be able to manufacture artificial organs in the future. The base material is decellularized extracellular matrix, and applications are primarily for bone. Viscosity and printability need to be optimized, along with the possibilities for cells to survive in the material.

Duties
The responsibilities for this position include developing materials and processes for 3D bioprinting, i.e. extrusion of hydrogels containing cells. Specifically, decellularized extracellular matrix will be used as the basis for the material. In addition to material characterization using e.g. rheology, the responsibilities include studies of cell survival after extrusion, using e.g. confocal microscopy, and characterization of printed constructs using microscopical techniques

You are expected to work safely and independently in a lab environment, as well as effectively in a large multidisciplinary group materials scientists.

In addition, communication of research results through scientific articles in well-established scientific journals and presentations at international conferences are also included as important aspects of the employment.

Qualification requirements

PhD degree in materials engineering, materials physics or chemistry, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering or a closely related field.

We require documented knowledge and research experience of:

Biomaterials 3D cell studies Extrusion-based bioprinting

We require very good oral and written skills in English, as well as very good skills in writing scientific publications.

Additional qualifications

It will be an advantage with experience in decellularization processes.

We attach great importance to your personal qualities and you must be independent and collaborative.

Emphasis is placed on your ability to publish scientific work in high-quality journals and to give presentations at scientific meetings.

Your application must include

  • A short letter of description of yourself, why are you interested in joining this project, and why you are suitable for this position
  • CV (maximum 2 pages)
  • Copy of the PhD, master's degree (or equivalent) and academic transcripts
  • Publication list. Mark the most relevant publications for the position and comment your contribution to those publications.
  • Names and contact details of at least two reference persons who have accepted to be references for you. It must also be stated what relationship you have had with the respective referent.

During the application period, we will continuously read application documents and call for interviews

About the employment

The position is a temporary position for 3 months. Scope of employment: 100%. Starting date as soon as possible or by agreement. Placement: Uppsala
