We are seeking a Lecturer in Bacteriology who will conduct research in bacteriology and teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet in Solna conducts research and education in immunology, infection biology, microbiology, cell biology, and cancer. Bacteriology is a major part of the department’s microbiological research and teaching.
MTC has around 400 affiliated staff members. Our key values are interdisciplinarity, clinically anchored basic research, and national and international collaboration.
Description of the subject area
The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies infectious diseases as one of the greatest global health threats. Bacterial pathogens cause a wide range of diseases, from common infections to emerging global threats such as antibiotic-resistant infections. The field of bacteriology includes bacterial pathogenesis, virulence, and RNA-mediated regulation, and is highly relevant to global health.
Your mission
You will be responsible for education in bacterial diseases at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including in medical, biomedicine, and optometry programs. Your role also includes supervising master's students, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral researchers.
You will conduct research in medical microbiology, particularly on human bacterial pathogens and bacterial pathogenesis, including studies on the regulation of bacterial disease mechanisms and immune responses to these pathogens.
You are expected to actively apply for competitive research funding at local, national, and international levels.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on education and research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical skills and very good scientific skills.

You must also have completed 10 weeks of higher education pedagogy training, in accordance with SUHF’s recommendations. If not completed at the time of appointment, this training must be undertaken within the first two years of employment.
As the position involves examination in Swedish, you must have proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian, or Danish (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages), in addition to English.
Assessment criteria
The Senior Lectureship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (3), pedagogical skills (3) and leadership and collaboration skills (2).

In addition to the assessment criteria specified in the guidelines for the appointment procedure, it is particularly meritorious if you have demonstrated:
- A PhD in a relevant field (e.g., infection biology, microbiology, or bacteriology)
- Extensive knowledge in bacteriology, microbial methods, cell and molecular biology techniques, and experience in RNA biology
- Course or teaching responsibility in bacteriology at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
