About us
To work at RISE’s Fiber Optics, Photonics and Twin Transition unit means to get the opportunity to address industrial and societal challenges through the development of innovative fiber optic sensor solutions. We are a team of 11 people today mixed with researchers, project managers and business developers located in Kista, Stockholm, where you will also have your location.
Thanks to the broad applicability of fiber optic sensor systems, we work across several different business and innovation areas, ranging from process industry and renewable energy to power electronics, medtech and defense.
About the role
We are looking for a researcher who will work with the research and development of advanced fiber optic sensor system solutions. You will be part of our team, with responsibility to deliver results in projects to customers as well as projects financed by public sources. The work includes interactions with external customers and partners, as well as writing quotes and applications for new projects. You will be expected to present your results to small and large audiences, internally and externally.
Depending on your experience and level of seniority, your main tasks will range from practical lab development (e.g. developing distributed sensing systems), leading and participating in field trials to initiating and leading research and innovation projects. Typically, you will work closely with other researchers in the unit but also with other experts within, e.g, AI, signal processing or application experts.
The emphasis of the projects we have are of an applied nature where some form of prototype or hardware that is developed at the end of the project is installed and evaluated at the industry. The main areas of research are distributed fiber sensing (DAS, Raman etc) and quasi-distributed fiber optic sensors and their industrial applications.
We work close to our sister unit Fiberlab in Hudiksvall, that develops and manufactures specialty optical fibers and cabling. The combination of our two units means that we can develop tailor-made fiber-optic sensor solutions in a rather unique way, benefiting industrial and research-oriented projects.
Who are you?
You have a PhD, or equivalent expertise, in a relevant field and at least a few years of work experience in R&D. You have extensive experience within one or more fields directly relevant to the unit’s main activities: distributed fiber optic sensing, FBGs, DAS, photonics and industrial implementation. You have strong practical experience working with fiber optics and/or photonics and a solid theoretical background. Experience from project management and in writing funding applications are preferable. Well written and spoken English is required. Fluency in Swedish is considered a merit. Skills in AI, and software such as Labview or Matlab in measurement applications are a merit.
As a person, you are customer oriented and skilled at turning customer needs into value through innovations. You enjoy working in dynamic teams, where the members are multidisciplinary and can divide your time between short-term and long-term projects. You are well organized, self-motivated and can work independently as well as part of a team. You have excellent communication and presentation skills.
Are we a good match?
Are you ready to turn research into real-world solutions? At RISE, we offer a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of science and industry—where your results are not just published but put into practice. As a researcher in fiber optic sensing and photonics, you’ll be part of a one-of-a-kind environment in Europe, combining in-house fiber manufacturing with advanced application research.
You’ll collaborate with some of Sweden’s most innovative companies—from startups to global industrial leaders—on projects that drive real impact. Our team is proudly international, with colleagues from across the globe. We value diversity, creativity, and collaboration—and we’re looking for someone who shares that mindset. Welcome to one of Europe’s leading research institutes and innovation partners.
We look forward to your application!
