2025-08-17LKAB has taken a leading role in shaping the modern mines of the future, where we already produce the world's most climate-efficient iron ore pellets. But we aim even higher. Our goal is to transition from coal and oil to carbon-free electricity and hydrogen. Fossil-free fuels are an important step on the path toward full climate neutrality.
We are looking for someone who wants to contribute to our journey. Take the opportunity to become part of the Energy and Hydrogen section at LKAB!
We are currently seeking an experienced Process safety engineer - Gas infrastructure – read more below.
Shaping the future
At LKAB, we are leading the transformation of our industry toward a sustainable future. Just as we aim to reshape the world, we are committed to developing every individual on our team, both personally and professionally.
Are you ready to help shape the future of the mining and mineral industry?
Your role
In this role as a Process safety engineer - Gas infrastructure, you will build and coordinate expertise in gas safety at the business area level, with focus on hydrogen but including other gases such as oxygen and nitrogen. You will be a key resource supporting both project and operations teams in safety-related work—from early stages of development projects to ongoing support in our facilities.
You will work with issues related to the introduction and use of gases, follow up on safety deliverables in projects, and ensure alignment with our internal standards. You will also monitor relevant regulatory requirements and standards, and actively participate in both internal and external networks.
Examples of responsibilities:
- Evaluate and assess different safety systems and their design
- Conduct and coordinate ATEX classifications and risk assessments
- Coordinate and compile safety-related results from various projects
- Support the operations organization during safety inspections and audits
- Evaluate the compliance of gas infrastructure design with standards and regulation
The production technology department has recently established the Energy & Hydrogen section, with the aim of building the expertise needed to drive LKAB’s transformation. We are leaving traditional methods behind and investing in a fossil-free future—where the ultimate goal is to produce iron using hydrogen instead of coal.
This position is based in Kiruna, Gällivare or Luleå and travel to our operating sites is a natural part of the role.
What you bring
You are self-driven, confident in taking initiative, and thrive in an environment where new solutions are being shaped. You are proactive, solution-oriented, and curious about exploring new ways of working. The role requires both the ability to work independently and to collaborate closely with colleagues from various disciplines. You have a strong attention to detail and work in a structured and thorough manner.
To succeed in this role, we believe you have:
- A university degree, preferably at the master’s level or equivalent
- A valid driver’s license (required for all positions at LKAB)
- Strong communication skills and experience working in cross-functional teams
- Excellent proficiency in English; if you are not yet fluent in Swedish, you have a strong willingness to learn the language
You also bring several years of experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Working with safety issues related to combustible gases
- Inspection, construction, or design of gas systems
- Understanding of risks and consequences such as flame behavior
- Knowledge of the limitations and placement of hydrogen sensors
- Experience working with standards and regulations, and the ability to interpret and apply them in practice
What we offer:
A stimulating and challenging job, working on cutting-edge issues. In addition you will receive:
- Reward program.
- Free access to LKAB’s own gym and our partners’ facilities in Norrbotten.
- Wellness allowance and educational support, along with access to an art association, leisure club, mountain cabins, and family activities.
- Enhanced parental pay with up to 90% of your regular salary for up to six months (after one year of employment).
- Support and assistance in cases of illness or questions about work environment, health, wellness, and rehabilitation.
- Compensation for dental care and protective eyewear, including terminal glasses.
- Opportunity to apply for scholarships for both your and your children’s studies
- Access to our pension and insurance program with favourable rates.
- Relocation support for you and your family.
- Excellent conditions for settling in. We guide you through the official procedures necessary to settle in the country if you come from outside Sweden.
- We also provide temporary accommodation for a reasonable period and help you find a permanent place to live according to your personal needs.
You're welcome to submit your application! Please note that the recruitment process is paused during July and into early August due to the summer holiday period. We will begin the selection process once we return, which means feedback may take a little longer than usual. Thank you for your patience – we wish you a wonderful summer!
