The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 56 000 students and 6 600 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
Subject area
Single-cell and functional genomics applied to Diabetes
Subject area description
The position focuses on integrating single-cell and spatial omics approaches with functional assays in human tissue to investigate the cellular and molecular basis of diabetes. The appointee will contribute to the development of experimental and/or computational tools to analyze human pancreatic tissue using spatial transcriptomics, electrophysiology, imaging-based assays, and integrative data analysis. The goal is to map disease-related cellular states and spatial patterns of dysfunction in the pancreatic microenvironment. The work will be conducted in a clinically relevant setting, using unique human tissue samples and in close collaboration with clinical and academic partners. The lab’s interdisciplinary approach encourages contributions to related projects, including applications of machine learning to autoimmune disease and non-invasive diagnostics using cell-free nucleic acids.
Duties
- Develop and optimize protocols for high-resolution spatial transcriptomics and gene expression profiling in pancreatic tissue slices
- Perform live tissue imaging, calcium imaging, electrophysiological measurements, and pharmacological perturbation assays
- Execute single-cell and spatial omics protocols using high-throughput liquid handling platforms
- Analyze spatial and single-cell omics data using computational tools, including machine learning approaches
- Implement and manage workflows for large-scale data processing on high-performance computing systems
- Design and perform validation experiments through tissue imaging, molecular assays, and functional readouts
- Present findings in group meetings and international conferences, and contribute to manuscript preparation
- Support supervision and mentorship of junior researchers and students in the lab
Eligibility
The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg.
To be eligible for appointment as a postdoc, the applicant is required to have a doctoral degree, a doctoral degree in art or a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This eligibility requirement must be met before the employment decision is made.
In the first instance, those who have completed their degree no more than three years prior to the end of the application period shall be considered. Those who have completed their degree more than three years prior to the end of the application period may also be considered in the first instance if special grounds exist. Special grounds relate to leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, commissions of trust within union organisations, service within the defence services or other similar circumstances, as well as clinical service or service/assignment relevant to the subject area.
Assessment criteria
- A PhD in molecular biology, physiology, bioinformatics, mathematics, or other quantitative biosciences.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Single-cell and spatial transcriptomic methods
- Scientific programming in Python and/or R
- Machine learning or deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow)
- Pancreatic physiology, including islet isolation, slice preparation, and functional assays
- Electrophysiology and/or live tissue calcium imaging
- Molecular biology techniques (e.g., qPCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, library preparation)
- Strong motivation in working at the interface of experimental and computational biology
- Ability to think independently, troubleshoot creatively, and collaborate in a highly interdisciplinary team
- Excellent written and oral communication skill in English
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
Employment
The employment is full time and temporary, two years with the possibility of one year's extension, with placement at the Institute of Biomedicine. First day of employment as agreed.
